Volunteering - Kangaroo population surveys

Date: Monday 22nd April 2024
Time: 9am onwards Location: Spring Plains Nature Conservation Reserve, Heathcote. Meet at the corner of Spring Plain track and Chisholm track. See map below.
Equipment: Close toed shoes, long sleeves, hat/sun protection

In the forest, you can’t just count the number of roos that you see. Instead you need to use some interesting science that involves counting the number of pellets they leave over spatial and temporal scales.

This monitoring program will help us understand how large the kangaroo population is in the area and potentially help us to understand what impact they have on the ecosystem.

We have a series of transects with plots along each where we have cleared the area of scats in the prior weeks. The task will be to go to these plots and count the number of pellets in each. With enough information we can estimate the population across the site. We will also be integrating this with other approaches to ensure confidence in our measures.
