Reviving Habitat Webinar: Are Nest Boxes Effective for Marsupials in Box-Ironbark Forests?

Hear from our guest speaker Ross Goldingay from Southern Cross University about his research with Karen Thomas and Darren Quin over a 6-year period near Bendigo in this intriguing webinar.

Together, they monitored nest boxes installed through a 600-ha block of forest with natural tree hollows in short supply. Hear about how the trio recorded very high levels of nest boxes used by Brush-tailed Phascogales and Inland Sugar Gliders.

This study provides many important insights for habitat restoration more generally for hollow-dependent marsupials.

Ross researches wildlife ecology, chiefly arboreal mammals and secondly pollination ecology. For the past 20 years he has predominantly researched threatened wildlife species such as gliders, koalas, broad-headed snakes and frogs. He has also looked at habitat restoration utilising glide poles and nest boxes. Central to Ross' work is partnering with community groups, including the Friends of the Koala and the Bendigo Field Naturalist Club.
